Oceanographic institute: You are
volunteering at the Oak Hollow Oceanographic Institute, which is setting up a
study of marine species in the Cape May, NJ area. The scientists at Oak Hollow
are trying to understand the complexities of the local marine food chain. You
want to keep information on scientific staff at the institute and the various
local marine species they study. For each staff member, you want to store a
first name, last name, date hired, cell‐phone number, and e‐mail
address. Some staff members supervise other staff members, but each staff
member has at most one supervisor; you want the database to store the
supervisory relationships among staff.

For each species you want to store each
species’ scientific name, common name, estimated local population, and typical
lifespan. For each species, you also want to record multiple observation
events, each of which has a date/time, latitude, longitude, comments, and which
staff member made the observation. For each species, you also want the database
to be able to record which species it is known to prey upon.

For example, the great white shark is
known to prey on both harbor seals and dolphins. Naturally, one species may
prey on many others and may itself be preyed upon by more than one other
species.

Design a database that will store this
information. Draw an ER diagram, and write a database design outline. You may
add “ID” fields where necessary.
