This concept surfaced over time, initially in Europe and then across the globe, when females started to demand equal opportunities. Though women got the right to vote or do a job, unfortunately, they realized after a considerable time that they were merely being used and exploited (Vargas, 2018). Especially if we look around, we could find very few black women in the top executive positions in any field. The “underrepresentation of African American” women in senior-level positions is a problem. First, this may cause an unintentional and invisible bias when hiring leaders in the workforce so that African American women are not hired because of the bias. This behavior can be traced back to slavery and people being categorized through physical appearance, which caused them not to be given equal opportunities (Hoobler et al., 2011). Lack of mentorship at the top-most position is another cause of misrepresentation of black and ‘African American’ women in the managerial posts. Their numbers in government and business continue to grow yearly however, despite these advances, the lived experiences of black leaders remain underrepresented by the available literature. Moreover, there is a lack of literature explaining these disparities’ effects on black and African American women (Sanchez-Hucles & Davis, 2010).
