– Being a child grew up in a small town in Viet Nam, I was told a lot of inspric story about my grandfather being known as a medical herbalist that helped so many people in our town. He created different types medication from plants and herbs. He used the living room as his office to diagnose his patients by feeling their pulse on the wrist, external symptoms, and signs of disease. He then will prescribe and handmade all the medication for them. Some medications come as dried herbal form that the patient have to cook thoroughly in water for few hours to get the broth, or sometimes it could come as soft chewy candy-like texture for the patient to swallow. My dad is the second generation in our family that continues my grandfather career until today. When I was 12, my dad shown me an old back and white picture when he served as a medical supplement in the Vietnamese soldiers. His mission was to treat solider with disease, sickness, allergy, first aid during war. Personally, I could not understand how my grandfather and my dad was be able to heal people using only herbal decoctions. Thereby, their method of treatments always was a great interest to me. I liked to spend time watching my dad’s work and asking him questions of how he knows that specific leaf could treat a disease or a wound, how is it different from regular cooking plants or decorating plants.When I was 10, I had chick pox and got treated by hot steaming my body with a pot full of herbs. I felt better after 2 days treatment, and the chick pox also disappeared quickly.– Growing up witness my older generation have helped so many people and myself, I really admire how my grandfather and my dad have saved many people’s life by approaching their tranditional medicine knowledge along with the passion to help people, my exposure to medical professional has been formed day by day since then. After I graduated from high school in Viet Nam, I decided to make a big move for my Pharmacy goal which is going United States and pursue my journey.– By getting into PharmD program at University of Florida to follow the path of pharmacy, I’m developing the tools necessary to advocate for & support patients, both within & beyond my future practice as a pharmacist. My grandfather and my dad helped me see this profession in a way that has left me inspired, with a sense of mission & vocation, which I hope to see through by completing my PharmD.
